Kafka the video game

indexKafka, the crown prince of existential despair, is to be the inspiration for a video game. What next? The Sylvia Plath Joke Book? Samuel Beckett Party Hats?

In this game, the player must escape from melancholy scenes and surreal traps which mimic the confinements in Kafka’s novels The Castle and Metamorphosis. What larks!

It’s been done before. A video game called The Witcher is based on a fantasy series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. And a few years ago Dante’s Inferno provided the inspiration for a game released by Electronic Arts.

What would Kafka have made of it? One can’t quite imagine him on a video game console. In his own words: “Evil is whatever distracts.”
